A Message from the Director of Pediatric Oncology at Johns Hopkins

Dear Friends:

We, the members of the Division of Pediatric Oncology at Johns Hopkins, honor the children and their families who have been touched by cancer and pledge our ongoing commitment to curing pediatric cancer through scientific discovery, compassionate care, commitment, collaboration, and tenacity.

Before the age of 20, one in every 330 Americans develop cancer and every school day, 46 young people are diagnosed. They place their lives into our hands, hoping to become a survivor. It is an awesome responsibility, and one our faculty and staff does not take lightly.

Our vision is not only to cure and ultimately prevent cancer in children, but to protect the quality of life of children saved. Today, because of collaborative research, 78% of childhood cancer patients overall will survive. Yet, there is still more work to be done to improve the cure rates for all pediatric cancer types and to pioneer new treatments with fewer long-term side effects.

Please take a moment to help us reach our goal of curing childhood cancer by pledging a gift for research. Your donation matters.

$50 will fund one hour of research
$400 will fund one day of research
$2000 will fund one week of research
$8000 will fund an entire month of research

With your help, we will reach the day when every child with cancer can be guaranteed a cure.

Sincerely,

Donald Small, M.D., Ph.D.
Division Director of Pediatric Oncology at Johns Hopkins

Giant Food Raises $1.5 million to "Strike Out" Childhood Cancer

Giant Food reached its goal of raising $1.5 million from the 2009 Triple Winner Game, a program designed to raise money to care for those with childhood cancer and search for a cure.  This year's game marks the 5th annual Triple Winner Game for Giant Food.

"Through Triple Winner, it has been our mission to eradicate childhood cancer," said Robin Michel, executive vice president and general manager of Giant Food.  Because of this program, our associates, customers and suppliers have raised more than $47 million to date to directly support cancer research and care for children."  Giant's sister company, Stop & Shop, originally started the Triple Winner Game in 1991.

The Triple Winner game is a scratch card promotion in which participants can win either a free product, a gift card or cash prizes up to $10,000.  The promotion, which sold out of scratch card tickets more than  two months before the official end of the program, distributed tickets to customers who made a $1 donation to fight pediatric cancer.

Continuing their support and dedication to the program, the Baltimore Orioles partnered with Giant to promote Triple Winner at home games to the thousands of fans who visited Oriole Park at Camden Yards this spring.

The 2009 Triple Winner game raised $1.25 million for the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University of Medicine and $250,000 for the Children's Cancer Foundation.  This was the second year that Giant partnered with the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, which is consistently ranked as one of the top cancer centers in the country by US News and World Report.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels Donates $35,000 to Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center to Support Childhood Cancer Research

July 16th's Handprint Ceremony commemorated the brave battles of local childhood cancer patients

Childhood cancer patients and their families who have received treatment at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center joined Hyundai and its dealers to present Heather J. Symons M.D. with a check for $35,000.  Dr. Symons has been selected as one of thirty 2009 Hyundai Scholars nationwide and the donation will support her research into allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

Ten-year-old Michael Gardner from Baltimore, who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 8 and lost his knee to the tumor, has been selected by Hope on Wheels to serve as a Regional Youth Ambassador.  Michael shared his story of survival with the crowd and showing off his brand new leg.

The childhood cancer patients from Kimmel Cancer Center placed their colorful handprints on a white Hyundai Santa Fe to represent their courageous battles and share their hope with other children and families across the country.

Hyundai and its dealers have donated more than $12.4 million since 1998 to fund life-saving childhood cancer research.  In 1998 New England-area Hyundai dealers began raising funds to support the Jimmy Fund at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Since then the program has grown to fund hospitals and research institutions nationwide and is supported by all of Hyundai’s nearly 800 dealers. Hyundai Hope on Wheels is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Chesapeake Bay Area Charities of Maryland is a nonprofit organization created to raise funds for local charities. Founded by the local owners of Outback Steakhouse, CBAC has a particular interest in pediatric cancer treatment and research, and dedicates most efforts to benefit the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. Currently, CBAC is working to fund the Outback Steakhouse Teen Rehabilitation Room and the Outback Steakhouse Kids for Cure Research Endowment at Johns Hopkins Hospital. While research and treatment for pediatric cancers remain CBAC’s focus, CBAC also contributes to other charities such as FARA, Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance, and Special Olympics Maryland.

To raise funds CBAC organizes a number of events throughout the year. CBAC’s Flagship Sponsor, Outback Steakhouse, cooks and serves food at each event. This year’s events will include the 9th Annual Clay Classic, the 3rd Annual Boomerang Motorcycle Poker Run, and the 17thAnnual Golf Tournament. Each event offers a unique and fun twist to otherwise classic sporting activities. CBAC’s efforts are also extended into individual Outback Steakhouse locations with the Holiday Toy Drive, a program that gathers new toys and delivers them directly to the pediatric oncology center at Johns Hopkins Hospital at Christmas time.

Visit the Chesapeake Charities web site for more information.
